Tom King

1964 to 1968

Achievement in the classroom certainly doesn’t have to correlate to success later on.  Tom was a prime example.  Tom gained School Certificate in 1966 and University Entrance in 1967 but recalls that his last year at college was less than memorable!  However he attended university and graduated with a Bachelor of Science Surveying from Otago University in 1971 and in 1974 with a First Class Honours Degree in Civil Engineering from Auckland University.  Then in 1996 Tom studied through Massey University and graduated with a Diploma in Business Administration.

At school Tom was a very valuable member of the 1st XV rugby team.  He played in the firsts in 1966/67/68 and in 1968 toured Australia with the Waikato Secondary Schools’ team.

Tom has had an interesting and varied work history in all facets of Engineering.  Starting as a Site Engineer, then a Construction Engineer, a Design Engineer, a Drilling Engineer, an Investigation Engineer and a General Manager.  He was worked in Papua New Guinea, Ethiopia, The Azores and Indonesia in Geothermal Drilling, in Chile in hydroelectric power station construction and based at Wairakei in all of New Zealand’s geothermal fields.  Tom now oversees the family business of Steel Framing for commercial and residential buildings.

Presently Tom is Trustee with the Craters of the Moon Trust in Taupo supervising their kiosk extension.  He’s fully involved with improving the performance of the family business, he manages a property portfolio owned by the family and is looking at one more assignment to keep him busy, probably geothermal drilling management in Kenya!

Tom is a sports fanatic and also has an interest and passion for horse racing.  He is a part owner of Chase a Fortune and Spare a Fortune – good luck with that!!

Tom and his wife Mary have three sons, Matthew (1978), Samuel (1979) and Grant (1981).They have one grandson and one granddaughter and another grandchild expected in November.
