Shane Dye

Shane was built to be a jockey and a very good one at that.  He started riding at a young age and was “in the money” soon after leaving school.

Shane was an excellent student in the classroom, he was a very good public speaker and a great role-model.  As well as gaining School Certificate, Shane was the tennis champion every year and also won the school cross country.

Born in Matamata, New Zealand on 26/9/1966, champion jockey Shane Dye has been labeled racings “golden boy” and is regarded as the greatest tactical jockey in the world. His record speaks for itself. After becoming NZ’s champion apprentice in 1983–1985, he moved to Australia in 1985. He was NSW leading jockey in 1990–1991 and again in 1996–1997, also landing himself two Sydney premierships. Shane has ridden 100 Group One winners and over 300 Group or Listed Race winners, including the Melbourne Cup in 1989, four consecutive Golden Slippers from 1989–1992, the Cox Plate in 1995, 4 Derby winners and 9 Oaks winners. He is the first rider in fourteen years to ride one hundred winners in a Sydney season. Shane has ridden winners totaling more than seven million dollars in stake money in the one season. Shane has had two nasty falls in his career resulting in broken vertebrae in his neck and back, fortunately not resulting in spinal cord injury. His injury while riding in Hong Kong required major head surgery as a result of a brain bleed.  He also suffered a broken back, lost the right in his right eye but fortunately got it back after two month.  This injury kept him from riding for some time.

Shane has ridden over 2000 race wins and has ridden all over the world – America, England, Japan, Singapore, Hong Kong, Macau, Mauritius and Australia.  During one season in Hong Kong Shane rode stake money to the value of 18 million NZ dollars.

He has met the Queen, many Prime Ministers and numerous famous people on his journeys.  Shane makes his home in both Macau or Mauritius.  He is still riding (in his 40’s).  He has two wonderful sons, Nicholas 21 and Jack 10.   Nicholas is in the gambling industry.  He loves sports and follows the American NFL and NBA while Jack is very keen on riding and loves it.
