Richard Prevett CA

1954 to 1959

Richard is one of a very few ex-students to win a New Zealand Athletic event.  As well as many achievements including hockey 1st II and Piako and Waikato hockey representative, school tennis champion and athletics, he became a Waikato and New Zealand 400 m hurdles champion.

Richard not only had a love for sport but has been a very successful playwright, actor and director.  Those who have attended performances at the Matamata Little Theatre will have split their sides at Richard’s antics.

As well as pursuing a career in Accountancy in Matamata up until this day, he had a stint of teaching Accounting/Economics at Matamata College from 1970 to 1979 and also lectured at Waikato University for a year.  His presentation of the “Balance Sheet” to retiring Principal Arthur Lucas has been a source of amusement to many – it was still being talked about at the Staff Reunion held in 2010.

Don Scott (HOD Accounting) influenced Richard to study Accountancy at University while Margaret Jellie and Elizabeth Cranswick (English Teachers) encouraged his love of drama and the theatre.

Richard’s mother was an ex-teacher at Matamata College, his father a BOT member and sister Margaret attended school and was a College A netballer.
