Eleanor Hawe

Elearnor has had a very successful and interesting career.  Her initial schooling was at Waharoa Primary School then Matamata Intermediate before attending Matamata College for four years.
At school Eleanor gained School Certificate and University Entrance, and then went to Hamilton Teachers College and Waikato University directly from the sixth form.
At school Eleanor enjoyed the opportunity to participate in a range of sports including netball, basketball, tennis and volleyball.
Eleanor graduated with a Bachelor of Education and Master of Education (Hons) from Waikato University in the 1970s and later embarked on further study at the Auckland University and graduated with a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Education, in 1990.

During the 1970s to late 1980s she taught in a number of primary schools in the Waikato region and in Auckland.  In addition, Eleanor spent a year as an exchange teacher in Sydney and a short time as a research assistant at Waikato University.

From 1987 to the present day, Eleanor has been a Principal/Senior Lecturer in Education at the Auckland College of Education and then at the University of Auckland.  She works, in the main, with teachers who are upgrading to a Bachelor’s degree, and with teachers/students involved in Masters and Doctoral study in education.

Eleanor has also carried out research in the area of assessment, having recently completed a three-year term as PhD advisor for students and she is currently Associate Dean (Programmes) for the Faculty of Education.
Eleanor contributes her success to the excellent education that she received throughout her years of schooling at Waharoa and Matamata which provided a sound platform for later educational achievements.  She commented it is interesting that today she works with colleagues who also attended Matamata College, albeit a little earlier than herself.  She often talks about the impact teachers like Jim Feist and Margaret Jellie had on her success, particularly when it comes to skills learnt in writing papers for publication.

Her parents had the foresight to take up golf in their mid to later years. Through them, she developed a passion for the sport (which has continued through to her niece Erin – profiled as an undergraduate of Kent University, USA) and even though Eleanor only plays once a week, she manages to maintain a respectable handicap.  For the past 15 years Eleanor has been a member at the Howick Golf Club where each weekend she gets to enjoy panoramic views over the Hauraki Gulf while she plays.

Her immediate goal now is to complete two research studies and from these, write papers for presentation at two conferences in 2013 – one conference in Munich, the other in Istanbul.  She is hoping to build in some rest and recreation around these conferences.
