Beau Wills

2005 to 2009

Like the other members of his family Beau was destined to be a scholar and a sportsman.

He won the school tennis championships, often in tough duels with Travis Scott who was also a talented player.  Beau played tennis for Waikato age group teams and during his last two years was a member of the Waikato senior men’s team.  His club team, Walton, won the Waikato interclub competition on five occasions.  Beau was awarded the Sportsmanship for Waikato Junior tennis in his final year.

He was also a talented basketballer.  Beau captained the school team and received the award for most valuable player for five years.

In volleyball Beau played for the school team, the Waikato Under 19s, New Zealand Under 19s and was a member of the Hamilton Men’s Club team.

As well as excelling in the above three sports Beau participated in and was very successful at swimming, cross country and athletics.

What a tremendous experience for Beau – attending College in the States and winning a tennis scholarship.  Beau started at Brevard University, North Carolina and played Division 2 tennis for two years.  He then transferred to Hofstra University and has played Division One this year.  The standard of tennis is extremely high at both colleges.  They play both singles and doubles against other colleges in the area.

As a team they train almost every day on the courts and in the gym.  They also travel a lot as a team so the team members become like family.  The friendships Beau has made from all over the world through tennis in America is definitely a highlight.

Fitting in his studies at the same time as training and playing is somewhat of a challenge but he has learnt to manage his time well.  In the classroom he is studying Business Management and to date his points average at university is 3.6 out of 4.  Not bad for someone who spends so much time training and playing!

When Beau finishes his degree and is no longer playing tennis he plans on returning to New Zealand where he would like to start as a personal trainer and one day run his own gymnasium.
