Annie Oliver (nee Sutherland)

1920's to 

Annie (or Anne as she was generally known) Sutherland attended Matamata District (Junior) High School along with some of her elder brothers and one younger brother in the 1920s.  The third daughter and eighth child of Hector and Margaret Sutherland of Okauia she returned to farm life after leaving school.  Anne was a keen sportswoman and captained the Piako B Hockey team at the Auckland Hockey Associations Country Week Tournament (year not known).

 

In 1932 Anne married Cecil Oliver, who had been teaching at the Okauia school a few years earlier.   Anne and Ces then lived in several locations including Waimate North, Kerikeri (while Cec was in the army during World War II), Ongarue, Taneatua, Patea and Feilding until finally returning to Matamata where Ces was appointed headmaster of Matamata Primary.   Two sons, Brian and Warwick were born during their time in Northland and and a daughter, Marion while in Taneatua.

 

Back in Matamata in the late 1950s, Anne resumed her old friendships and love of sport by taking up golf which she played enthusiastically for the rest of her life.   Ces died in 1964, Anne in 1977, just short of her 69th birthday.
