Girls Excelling in Sport
With the winter sport season upon us, Matamata College Sports teams are once again boxing above their weight. There have been some spectacular results to date, across a number of the teams and a number of codes. At this, the nearly half way mark of the season, although there have been meritorious performances in boys and girls sports- it is the girls top teams in Football and Netball leading the way.
The Girls 1st XI Football team capped off an impressive start to the season last weekend. In a second round rematch with Hillcrest High school (the only team to have beaten them in the first round) the Matamata girls completely outplayed their opposition to win 7-2.
Well coached by Malcom Raynel and Darren Freeman, the team is developing a free flowing style and have strengths at both ends of the pitch. Kirsten Jones-Wiseman is proving rock solid at goal keeper and is ably supported by Mary Crabb and Kimika Clements in defence.
Up front the team has in Kate Smitstra and Maggie Leaver, genuine strike power. The whole team is combining well, working hard and are on track for a successful season.
