Girls A Volleyball Win Waikato
Congratulations to our girls who displayed true grit and determination to defeat Hillcrest High School in the Waikato final a few weeks ago. This was an amazing win for our injury hit team as they came from two sets down and survived a match-point in the third set. The team then dominated the final two sets with Shaydene Begovich leading the way to take out a much deserved victory. In the final two sets Te Aorere Wharawhara put in a commanding blocking performance and she was ably supported by Nicole Butterworth, Poihaere Wharawhara and Olivia Goodwin who also had strong games.
The team then travelled to National Tournament in Palmerston North last week where their successful season continued. Their Waikato win qualified the team for the top 32 and they went on to claim a Division 1 spot for the first time since 2010. Playing against the strongest teams in NZ the girls more than held their own including taking a set off the number two seed Otumoetai College. Victories against Nelson College for Girls, Wellington East Girls’ College and especially Tauranga Girls’ College were major highlights as the girls finished in 12th place in a 97 team competition. With a number of this team returning in 2018, Mr Kilham will no doubt be looking forward to another strong performance next year.
