REID & HARRISON ART AWARDS 2016

All I can say is WELL DONE!
The senior art students need to be congratulated on their efforts with their entries into this year’s Art Awards.
The Reid & Harrison Awards were announced on Thursday 15th September and a record turnout of spectators were there to enjoy the artwork on dis- play at the Wallace Gallery in Morrinsville.
Over 30 mixed media and photographic pieces were entered from students in Year 11, 12 and 13.
The theme this year was ‘the gift of water’. It was amazing to see the unu- sual, unique and classical interpretation of this idea in the student’s work.

Keith Cooke from Reid & Harrison along with Daron Parton, a local and international illustrator had the task of judging the mixed media and Keith and Paul Sutherland, a local and international photographer judged the photos. This was no easy task and one I would not like to undertake. Paul had trouble making his final deci- sion on a selection of photographs due to the high quality.

There were three Categories this year, the first Mixed Media. This section was filled with some amazingly de- tailed work in a range of styles. Sydney Young in year 13 was the supreme winner of this closely followed by Leah Williams from year 12 taking away runner up.
The second category was Photography and top spot was tightly contested. Kate Hancock in year 12 received the supreme award followed by a tie for second, Taylor-Rose Hayward year 12 and Charleigh Mackintosh year 13. There was a new category added this year, Emerging Artist. This was created to encourage the up and coming year levels who show great potential. I am pleased to say

Ally-Jane McDonald in year 11 won this with a pencil drawing and Jayde Turner also year 11, received runner up.

I would like to thank Reid & Harrison for their continued support and generosity with the Arts at Matamata College. They are a pleasure to work with. I would also like to thank Black Photography for their help in framing the students art work.

I am extremely proud of the work the students have done and would like
to congratulate all on them on their efforts.
