Illnesses and time away from school
Absences
If your son or daughter is absence from school we need to know the details of the absence as soon as possible. It would be appreciate if you could either phone the school office on 07 881 9018 on the morning of the absence, or email the attendance office on mn@matamatacollege.school.nz
Please be sure to include the following details
The students name
Your name
The reason for the absence
The expected duration of the absence
Leave Passes
If a student needs to visit the dentist or get a hair cut this can often be arranged after school or at the weekend. If this is not possible we have the following leave pass system
The parent/guardian writes a note explaining the reason and time off necessary (allowing travel time)
The student places this note in the box at student reception before group time
The attendance officer enters the absence on the computer system and produces a written pass
The student carries the pass with them when they leave for the appointment
Please try to arrange appointment times so they will not overlap classes .
Needing to Leave School for Other Reasons
At times students become sick or suffer injuries during the school day. In this event the student goes to the school nurse for evaluation. In many cases they can rest and recuperate in the sick bay, or receive necessary treatment. In some cases it is necessary for them to go home in which case a parent or guardian is contacted. The student can then be picked up, or possibly make their own way home.
If any emergency occurs that means the student needs to leave school during the day for an unplanned reason. Please contact the office on (07) 881 9018 so arrangements can be made.
Holidays During Term Time
During the summer and term breaks students have over 12 weeks off each year. Parents need to obtain written permission to take students at all year levels out of school during term time. Applications for this should be in writing.
Please note the school often may not be able to offer catch-up assessments for those missed while on holiday.
Ongoing Medical Conditions
If any student has an ongoing medical condition that is likely to affect their performance in class or result in a high absence level it is important the school is informed.
This can be arranged through a note or phone call to the group teacher or if preferred through senior management or the school counsellor.
